Per Dr Ken German (Vehicle Crime Consultant, Writer, Journalist) today on Linkedin : (speaking of the UK, not ‘Murica. Drop your pitchforks)

“The rise in demand of Land Rover Defenders particularly by overseas gangs has seen a huge increase in the amount reported stolen in just one year

The cost to the UK was around £1.6m in 2018, which rose to £2.1m last year, a 34% increase. Good quality early series models, and parts from old-series Defenders, are increasingly valuable on the Black Market.
A new generation of the Defender arrived on UK roads this year. The new model shares no components with the old Defender.
Paranoid owners have agreed in some areas of the UK to place stickers in their rear window that state ‘Police Stop Me’ urging police to stop the car and check that the owner is behind the wheel. Land Rovers not sporting the signs will also be stopped.”

Shocking !

Weird.  When it comes to “stealing” and “Land Rovers” I kind of thought the dealers had a monopoly.

There’s a similar program here, if you have the voluntary sticker your car can be pulled over for no reason between 10 pm and 5 am. Not popular here because most people here on the road at those times are not car thieves but they are uni versally drunk. ( Cultural thing where I live “if we can’t drive drunk how will we get home” mentallity. Program is not popular.

This reminds me a little of the articles I'd read recently about catalytic converter theft in the UK.  Apparently thieves would pop under a newer car in broad daylight, sawzall out the cat and run.  Apparently there are enough rare earth elements in it to make it worth it there?  It made me wonder why that was a problem in the UK but in the US..

Catalytic converter theft is absolutely a thing in the US.

Alcoholic hicks, from the sounds of it! (Which squares with my viewing of the docu-series Letterkenny .)

Isn’t this the point of the aftermarket? You can literally build a new 65 Mustang from the aftemarket, shell and all. Also 69 Camaro, IIRC. Just do the same thing with the Defender. Start stamping new shells, frames, doors,.....

I stand corrected.   In my defense,  I'm in SW Ohio, so if it's a new phenomenon we won't see it here until the late 2020s..

You may not have organized rings stealing cats, but i f you’ve got meth heads & opioid addicts, you’ve got catalytic converter theft. Can’t imagine SW Ohio is an oasis from that.

Do people not carry comprehensive insurance in the UK? I’d rather deal with an insurance agent than a cop.

I was mostly trotting out the “everything happens 10 years later in Cincy” joke. It’s probably happening here, though it doesn’t seemed to have gotten local media’s attention like it has elsewhere (that or I’ve just not been paying attention).

It's still interesting to me that the first I hear of it is on a BBC article about a rash of thefts in London..

Want to say Ford Cosworth shared a similar distinction.  That there was  TG/GT segment about how connected to theft and gangsterism they were.

You can take a old Defender apart, shove it in some containers, ship it to don’t care wherebia and put it back together in a week. Sure, there is a aftermarket black market, but some of the stolen Defenders are exported, in components. E ven police ones, parked outside police stations, get stripped for parts, people are weird and mad about old Defenders... I’m sorta  happy I didn’t get one. I’d be worried I’d come out one morning to drive to work and find ether a car with no doors, bonnet, roof, engine, and interior or no car at all.
